Scense is a product developed by a Dutch company that has a complete focus on the management of the end users desktop by using dynamic session control, as it is called by the vendor. The idea is that the user behavior can be seen as a session: the user starts his session by logging in, he starts and uses his applications and ends his session by logging out. Scense supports the IT-manager by guiding and supporting these sessions. Scense's solution has a few components. Each PC will be equipped with a Scense client that, as soon as the user starts his computer, connects to the central database (Scense Database). When an application is started it checks access rights to applications and the predefined actions that need to be implemented on the PC. If an application is started for the first time, an installation-routine will be started. IT-managers will use Scense to store information about applications. For instance information about users and the applications they are authorized to start. ITmanagers are also able to take applications offline temporarily in case of application problems. These actions are all performed by IT personnel using the central database. Scense 4.0 solution provides a user-based application management solution. Scense 4.0 adds the user-based component to Altiris software virtualization solution (machine-based) to support roaming use of applications as well as features such as global excludes and full TS/Citrix support.
