The Network Processing Module 4100 series provides the X40S system with physical and virtual (802.1Q VLAN) network interfaces and assures policy - based flow classification distribution to the APMs. The NPM dramatically reduces the complexity issues surrounding security applications, handling load balancing, redundancy and fault tolerance automatically, greatly reducing the number of network devices and configurations previously required. The NPMs dynamically learn flows based on configurable parameters and direct the flows to a group of APMs that are running the required security service. In the case of firewall failure on an APM or an APM failure, the NPM will continue to distribute new flows to other APMs in the group. If firewalls are synchronized across a group of APMs, the NPM can dynamically re-route flows to any active or standby APM in the group, preserving full stateful inspection of the established flows. The user can configure the NPM to learn flows based on five fields in an IP packet: source IP address, destination IP address, source port, destination port, and protocol. The user can also configure a specific action for every flow including service (i.e. send the flow to a security service), route, or drop. Intelligent applications can take advantage of this powerful feature of the NPM to dynamically install their own policies on the NPM. The NPM 4100 has two Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-SX) interfaces targeted at high throughput requirements in shared or dedicated data center environments.
