HSIM-A6DP

Enterasys HSIM-A6DP is an Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) HSIM for SmartSwitch 6000 modules and the SmartSwitch 2200 providing redundant ATM Uplinks. The HSIM-A6DP uses a powerful Intel i960 microprocessor for high-speed packet/cell conversions. Like the FDDI HSIM, the HSIM-A6DP offers media flexibility via ATM Port Interface Modules (APIMs). Along with flexibility in connectivity, the Dual APIM design allows for redundant connections as separate ATM Access points. One APIM is configured to act as the primary interface, while the second APIM is in standby, and will automatically take over service, should the primary path fail. The HSIM-A6DP supports both Permanent Virtual Channels (PVC) and Switched Virtual Channels (SVC). PVCs are manually configured through local or remote management (SNMP), and are ideal where a connection will be required for a long period of time with a fixed amount of bandwidth. The HSIM-A6DP supports the ATM Forum LAN Emulation 1.0 Specification. In an Emulated LAN, the HSIM-A6DP functions as a LAN Emulation Client (LEC). The LEC is the entity within the 6E132-25 which performs data forwarding, address resolution, and other control functions for all end-systems within the SmartSwitch 6000. An LEC also provides a standard LAN service interface to any higher layer entity that may interface to the LEC. An ATM NIC or LAN Switch interfacing to an ELAN, supports a single LEC for each ELAN to which they are connected. An end-system that connects to multiple ELANs (perhaps over the same UNI) will have one LEC per ELAN. Each LEC is identified by a unique ATM address, and is associated with one or more MAC addresses reachable through that ATM address. In the case of the ATM NIC, for instance, the LEC may only be associated with a single MAC address (that of the Workstation). With an ATM attached LAN Switch, the LEC would be associated with all the MAC addresses assigned to the particular ELAN reachable through that LAN Switch. Note that in the case with the LAN Switch, this set of MAC addresses may change, both as nodes come up and down, and as particular paths are reconfigured.
