For high-speed backbone extensions to the entire SmartSwitch family, Enterasys offers the High Speed Interface Module (HSIM), a user-configurable interface that plugs into selected switching modules and provides connectivity to FDDI, Gigabit Ethernet, ATM or WAN environments. VHSIM slots incorporate a "backward compatible" design and are capable of accepting new VHSIMs as well as all the field-proven HSIMs, ensuring investment protection for uplink modules purchased in the past.
