The IBM Netfinity Gigabit Ethernet Adapter offers a high-performance network connection for IBM server customers who need Gigabit Ethernet throughput over their existing Category 5 twisted pair cabling. With its combination of blazing performance, innovative server features, and compatibility with industry standards, it offers exceptional value and power in a server LAN adapter. The Netfinity adapter provides a simple migration path to Gigabit Ethernet with its support for 10Mbps, 100Mbps, and 1000Mbps over Category 5 twisted pair cabling. This means that no cabling upgrade is required in most cases to move from Fast Ethernet to Gigabit. The adapter's auto-negotiation capability enables it to detect the speed and duplex mode of the hub or switch at the other end of the link and configure the adapter automatically. So the adapter can be used at 10Mbps or 100Mpbs at first and will be ready for a seamless transition to Gigabit Ethernet when the server needs the additional bandwidth. The Netfinity Gigabit Ethernet Adapter provides breathtaking Gigabit performance with its proven Alteon-based chip technology and device drivers. Its 1000Mbps data rate and support for PCI 2.2-compliant, 64-bit, 66 MHz buses in the server offer performance an order of magnitude higher than Fast Ethernet. With support for optional jumbo frames, packet processing overhead can be reduced even further, improving throughput and efficiency. On-board processing of checksums and innovative PCI bus interrupt coalescence ensure that the host server's CPU is minimally taxed by network traffic.
