The Remote Switch Activation feature provides a means to obtain the unique activation key necessary to enable the Remote Switch capability within firmware level 2.2.1, or later on a specific FC Switch. Remote Switch function is used on two FC Switches that are interconnected with a pair of CNT's Open System Gateways. This function provides the fiber channel to ATM conversion across a wide area network, and is used with the Peer-to-Peer Remote Copy capability of the IBM Modular Storage Server (IBM 2106). These Remote Switch functions enable the two FC Switches, interconnected through the ATM network, to properly stage and manage the data transfer across the wide area network. This is a means of connecting two FC Switches into a distributed fabric that use a new or existing ATM wide-area network at ATM distances. The performance limitations of the ATM network must be considered, and typically only asynchronous operations will tolerate the latencies accrued.
