The Extended Fabric Activation feature provides a means to obtain the unique activation key necessary to enable the Extended Fabric capability within firmware level 2.2.1, or later on a specific FC Switch. Extended Fabric function provides extensions within the internal switch buffers to maintain performance with distances greater than ten kilometers, and up to seventy kilometers, by increasing buffering between the selected switch interconnect links. The actual fiber channel connection between the FC Switches with the Extended Fabric function enabled is provided by IBM Fiber Saver DWDM (IBM 2029), the Finisar Optical Link Extender (FLX-2000), or equivalent interconnections. Actual performance may vary depending on the conditions of the fiber connections, and the signal latencies at extended distances.
