The new Lotus Domino V4.6 Server unveils the server's expanded support of Internet standards as well as advancements for developing Web applications and making the server simple to use. This is the full Domino server which combines the messaging functionality of the Domino Mail Server with the power of Inter/intranet application development. Domino V4.6 Server supports a wide range of open Internet standards (including SMTP, MIME, POP3, IMAP, LDAP, and NNTP) that give you versatility, efficiency, and reliability like never before. SMTP and MIME protocols serve as the backbone to the structure of Internet mail. The SMTP protocol ensures that mail will be securely delivered--for mail might go through multiple SMTP servers to reach an ultimate destination host and mailbox. To allow the message to be more than just text, is the MIME protocol which extends the format of the message to allow audio, video, and multi-part messages. Domino includes the Message Transfer Agent(MTA) to implement these protocols. To access the messages that the previous protocols transfer, are the POP3 and IMAP protocols. Users are able to read and post articles in online discussion groups(known as newsgroups). You can also exchange news articles between Internet servers and host both USENET discussions that span the Internet, or discussions in private newsgroups created by your enterprise. Additional enhancements have been made to the Domino V4.6 Server, in relation to the Web. Domino V4.6 includes as updated Web server that is faster and provides advancements for designing interactive applications.
