Everybody who's ever had a camcorder owns at least one cassette - and probably a lot more - with 10 minutes of decent stuff scattered across two hours of tape. Now you can trim those marathon home videos into something more watchable, thanks to Pinnacle Systems' VideoDirector Studio 200. This slick hardware/software combination turns your PC into an easy-to-use digital video editor. Rather than simply digitizing and editing footage from your camcorder, VideoDirector sends your edited video back to your VCR, where the video is recorded onto another tape. Best of all, you don't have to install cards in your PC, nor will VideoDirector store massive files on your hard drive. Instead, you just connect your camcorder and VCR to your PC. Then hook VideoDirector's external video capture device to your PC's serial port. Once you have everything set up, the entire editing process is literally three steps: Log, Edit, and Make Tape. Editing is a simple drag-and-drop operation. There's also a limited tool set, which lets you add titles and transitions to your video, such as Fade To Black and Dissolve. You can even add some sound (MIDI, WAV, CD audio), provided you've connected your audio cables to the computer. When you're satisfied with your edits, simply click the Make button. The end result is a seamlessly edited and impressive home video full of nothing but good stuff.
